Two Day Breaks

This 2 day course follows on from the foundation day, or for those who have painted before and have an understanding of watercolour paints and some of the basic watercolour techniques, and would like to develop further.

There is no doubt landscape painting is popular, however those of us who paint landscapes know only to well that painting outdoors is challenging, most scenes worth painting are best painted early in the morning or late in the evening, when the shadows are long and the light is soft and warm. With continual changes in the light, variable weather etc. it's a lot to contend with, so to be sure your time is best used we’ve taken out the variables. With large images in the studio mimicing the vistas outdoors we can concentrate on the painting, it will make it much easier to understand and practice the skills needed for outdoor painting in the future.

DAY 0NE
We start with coffee at 10am and a short introduction to the day.
We stop for a buffet lunch halfway through the day, an informal time for discussion and chat, eaten either in the garden in the better weather or in the dining room.

We cover slightly more advanced use of colour, developing on the basic washes, building up colours by overlaying a number of washes without disturbing the the previous washes, giving us colours that wouldn’t be possible with a single wash. Using mediums, one to help you keep already painted areas safe, another to help the paint spread across the paper.
Selecting the range of colours for a particular type of result. The use of colour combinations that help the painting come together. As we go we’ll look at how some of the masters of watercolours achieved their results.

We’ll spend time on the hills in the early evening before dinner to gather some images by camera that we can use on day two. Before we finish for the day you’ll stretch your paper ready for the next day.

Over Dinner I’ve no doubt we’ll talk about the day and what you can expect from the next day.

DAY TWO
The day starts at 10am with coffee and selecting the images that will be the main focus of the days painting.

The studio is set up so that it mimics how it would be if you were painting outside. We start with ways to help you transfer the ‘view’ onto your paper (underdrawing), ready for painting, before beginning a look at how to make a composition work, what to include and what to leave out.

We’ll work through the painting stages, masking highlights, painting wet on dry, painting wet in wet, hard and soft edges, lifting out colour are some of the techniques we will be using.

Through the afternoon we’ll continue to work towards a finished painting in the late afternoon.

The events of the day are discussed over tea and cakes and you’ll leave with your finished watercolour and colour experiments.

Postcard size copies of your paintings will be sent to you so that you can show your new found talents to family and friends!
